The Puthukkulam Sree Nagaraja Swami Temple in Vengalloor is a rare temple in which Nagaraja is the presiding deity. It is believed that, Lord Parasuraman created Kerala for people to inhabit by throwing his axe in the ocean. But the place was filled with serpents. So he approached Lord Parameshwara to solve the problem, and Lord Parameshwara told that only Lord Ananthaswamy could help him. After performing severe penance Lord Ananthaswamy appeared before Parasuraman and solved the problem by controlling serpents. The festival is conducted to celebrate the birthday of Lord Ananthaswamy which falls on Ayilyam asterism of the Malayalam month Kanni.
The festival is celebrated by conducting ritualistic events for worshipping serpent Gods such as Noorum Palum, Ayilyam Pooja, Thalihu Kuda etc. In the evening of Ayilyam asterism, Sarppabali is conducted and a procession is held to the Southern region of the Kavu. On Makam asterism, Noorum Palum and Makam Idi is conducted..
